A while back I broke my ankle and wasn't working for a quite a bit. So I while rocking an awesome pink cast and had WAY more time than usual to think about things. The sort of stuff you never have time to do when your rushing about with work.
My question was, after 15+ years in the industry what did I like actually about my work? and did I actually like it at all? Hard one really, after a while we all go through a period of work exhaustion. Sometimes just hearing the same old shit over and over makes you want to just walk out or shove a life sized emoji down someone's throat.
So I chatted with lots of people. People I knew, people I was recommended. It was interesting to hear different perspectives and refreshing to meet new people. After way too many flat whites I came to the conclusion a am still passionate about design, but what I mean by design is really important.
I am not motivated by being some hero designer. I don't want to spend my time writing blogs, tweeting stuff and wracking up followers. I don't want hang out and regurgitate design methodology, binge on sexy graphics or sit around patting my buddy's on the back.
What I love is solving real problems for real people and making them awesome. I love the diversity of what design can mean and the challenge of understanding real user problems. I love working with smart people with new ideas and making things that have a point. I love that at its best it is design is a collaboration that connects the strategic thinking to actually making real things.
The other thing I learnt was that I am not alone. There are lots of other people out there who are passionate about what they do in the very same way.
So Making Things Monday was born...
